Stephen Romer is an acclaimed poet and translator.  His most recent collections include Set Thy Love in Order: New & Selected Poems (2017) and a French bi-lingual collection containing more recent poems Le Fauteuil jaune (2021).  He edited the anthologies 20th-century French Poems for Faber (2002) and (with Jennie Feldman) Into the Deep Street: Seven Modern French Poets,1938-2008. He has translated The Arrière-Pays, The Red Scarf and edited the essays of the major contemporary French poet Yves Bonnefoy. With Patrick McGuinness he translated The Day’s Ration, a selection of poems by Gilles Ortlieb, which won the Scott-Moncrieff Prize for translation into French in 2024. A collection of his critical writings, Chaos and the Clean Line:  Writings on Franco-British Modernism was published in 2024.

He taught for many years in Tours, and is now Lecturer in French at Brasenose College, Oxford.  He was elected FRSL in 2011, and made Chevalier de l’ordre des arts et des lettres in 2022.
